Creating a beautiful home is a lovely endeavor – and home decorating on a budget can be a challenge. Read on to find out my best tips for doing so in a cost effective way!

A Beautiful Home – The Why
I’m a stay at home mom and I’m on a budget. Simultaneously, creating a beautiful home is important to me. Not just for the material aspect of it – not even for that reason at all. Creating beauty around me with my own two hands provides a level of satisfaction that is unmatched. I read a quote recently that God makes things beautiful because He loves them – I think that about sums it up!
Let’s dig in to the best tips for home decorating on a budget – all of which I have personally practiced and applied in my own homemaking journey.
You Can Have a Beautiful Home, Even On A Budget
I love home decor and I love feeling inspired on Pinterest, Youtube, etc. I have heard plenty of other homemakers share that you can have a beautiful home on a budget. However, I felt that it was slightly un-relatable because their homes were already remodeled and beautiful. Although they had further projects to complete, the majority of their homes were gorgeous already.
I know for a fact that they once were where I am, but I want to share as someone who truly is just starting out! And what I’d like to share is: they actually are right. Haha. As I have gotten into thrifting and antiquing, I really have found that you can create beauty with next to nothing. It just takes time.

Thrift, thrift, thrift
Thrifting is the one thing that has helped me create a beautiful and cozy environment for my family relatively quickly. I say relatively because I still have a long way to go. However, looking back at where I started when I began staying home nearly two years ago – we’ve come a long way!
I recommend popping into the thrift store once a week or at least every other week. You’ll learn what your favorite shops are in your area. Another tip related to thrifting is to check out your local antique shops. While antique shops often have prices that are out of my budget, I find it helpful to pay attention to what’s there. More than once I have found items at the thrift store that I’ve seen at antique shops. The reality is that some people just don’t know what an antique is (I’m also one of those people – still learning!) and they just get rid of things they no longer need or use.
Another place you can check is Facebook marketplace, though this isn’t my favorite. While I do find lots on there that I like, I really don’t like having to meet up with people. That’s just a personal preference, but it is an option if you’re good with it.
Home Decorating On A Budget: DIY What You Already Have

I have been working on a photo collage in my living room for almost two years. No joke. All of the frames have been thrifted or were ones I already owned and I just painted them to match the color scheme I’m going with. It has literally costed me pennies – and it’s beautiful! I don’t yet have images in the frames because I haven’t gotten around to it budget wise. My plan is to use prints that are cohesive so it all flows together nicely. I’ve applied this same idea to plenty of other things in my home as well – paint can really go a long way.
Organize, Declutter, Rearrange, and Keep It Clean!
Another thing that has been so helpful in making my home feel lighter and more beautiful is to declutter it. I don’t know how it happened, but my husband and I ended up with so much stuff. I’ve donated a LOT over the past couple years. Some to thrift shops and some to family and friends. It’s amazing how just clearing up the clutter makes you appreciate your space. I’m also really intentional about what I bring in to our home.
Once you have organized and decluttered (which honestly is an ongoing thing), you can focus on keeping things relatively clean. I found that keeping the house clean was more stressful when stuff was in the way. Remove the stuff and keep only what you need, use, or absolutely love. Being able to keep things clean also makes you appreciate your home and take pride in caring for it.

Practice Contentment
My last tip for home decorating on a budget is probably the most important, because without it, everything else I shared is pointless. While I do believe you can create beauty on a super tight budget and that it’s important for the homemaker and her family, our attitudes through the process affect everything so much more. I find it helpful to look back at photos I’ve taken of my home throughout the past couple years and remember everything I’ve poured into it since then. It shows me how far we’ve come, and reminds me to be thankful. I get to slow down and enjoy the process – which sets the tone for my family!
